A Clicker
What is Clicker Training?
Clicker training is science based training system that is more technically known as "Secondary Positive Reinforcement".
It incorporates the use of a small metal box that makes a "clicking" sound, which is used to mark good behaviors. This is where the name "Clicker Training" came from.
It is a simple and effective tool that can be incorporated into your current training program. Clicker Training will enhance your horse's training by improving their motivation and willingness to perform. It is great for teaching the young or difficult horse to respond to basic cues and commands. It can even be used for helping the horse learn more difficult movements such as piaffe, flying changes and spins. The clicking sound is made by as small handheld box. The sound is used to tell the horse which behaviour will be rewarded. Clicker Training helps your horse understand exactly what you want them to do, it also gives the horse the motivation to perform.Understanding + Motivation = Excellence.
Clicker Training can be used to enhance your existing training program.
Once your horse understands the clicker it can also be left in your tool box, until such time as you need help to get through a problem or improve a response. The clicker is not a cue it doesn't tell the horse what to do, instead it tells them when they have responded to a cue correctly. The clicker sounds vastly different to the "clicking" sound you make with your tongue, it also has a very different meaning. So the horse will not get confused between the two types of clicks and their meanings. You can still use your tongue click to get the horse to go forwards.
Clicker training was first developed by behavioural psychologists in the 1960's. Since then it has been used extensively for training animals in marine parks and zoos. This gentle yet effective training tool is used to teach animals to accept simple medical procedures such as blood tests, without the need for anaesthetics. Clicker Training also provides enrichment and stimulation to animals in captivity. Clicker Training is suitable for horses of all ages and breeds. It can be used for groundwork, dressage, western, float loading, problem solving, training young horses, trick horse training, liberty work, barrel racing, cutting, reining and the list goes on... This is not a gimmick or fad... it is a gentle and effective training system that it is used in zoos and marine parks around the world.

Testimonial:
Dear Georgia,
I saw you, and your clicker training demonstrations at the Equitana in
I bought your book and several clickers.
I used the clicker training, as per your instructions with a horse that had been left at my friends place and which I took on. He was very afraid of people, difficult to catch, head shy, hard to bridle, never been rugged, etc, etc.
The clicker training worked fabulously with him, he enjoyed his training sessions and I think over the past few years we only ever have had two days where we had a bit of a backward day, it has always been progressive. Things have improved so much it is sometimes hard to believe where he was at, at the very start.
I started the riding side on and off last year and this summer have been doing a lot more but have been encountering a lot of blocks and found that the connection we have on the ground is just not there when I am in the saddle.
All the very best with your plans and goals for 2009.
Kind regards, Susan Lavin
